Q. I live on a “one way street.”  Where should I place my cart?

A. On the right side of the legal direction of travel.

 

Q. I live on a dead end street with no “cul-de-sac” and the trucks cannot safely turn

around.

A. In most instances the truck will back into the street and the carts should be placed on the right side traveling out.

 

Q. Where do I get information about this new program?

A. The information was attached to all the new carts and is posted on the City web page.

Q. Who do I call if my cart has not been emptied by 5 p.m.?

A. Call Trashmaster LLC who are contracted by the City to collect trash and

recycling at 203.466.2668.

 

Q. How can I identify the carts that go to my residence?

A. You may put your address on the rear of your carts. Do not put your name on the carts as they are assigned to your address, not to you.

 

Q. Do I take my carts with me if I move?

A. NO: Leave them at your old residence. The carts are owned by the City of Shelton and have been assigned to a specific address.

 

Q. My new residence does not have carts. How do I get them?

A. Please contact the Highways and Bridges Department at 203-924-9277.

 

Q. What are the dimensions of the Carts?

A. 64 gallon cart is 24”w x 27”d with a total height of 41.5”

96 gallon cart is 26”w x 34.5”d with a total height of 46”

 

Q. Can I recycle shredded paper?

A. YES: Shredded paper may be recycled. However, it must be placed in a brown paper bag prior to being placed in your recycling bin.

 

Q. Is there a charge for the carts?

A. NO:  Initial cart distribution is being provided at no cost to residents.

 

 Q. Can we receive an additional trash cart?

A. YES:

  • Multi-family residents that need more capacity may order additional carts up to the number of units in the building, at no charge.

 

  • Single family residents who need additional capacity can purchase an additional

cart at a cost of $65.00.

 

It is recommend that you evaluate your needs after using the new system before ordering an additional cart as residents in other cities have found that with proper recycling it should not be needed.  The cart provided has a capacity of more than three conventional garbage cans.

 

Q. We need more recycling capacity. Will the City provide an additional cart?

A. YES: At no cost.

 

Q. What if my cart is lost or stolen?

A.  Please contact the Shelton Police Department’s non-emergency number 203-924-1544 and bring a copy of the report to the Highway Department who will issue a new cart at no cost.

 

Q. Can I leave additional material next to the cart or in my old blue bin?

A. NO: All material must be in the carts provided with the lid closed tightly.  Items left on the ground, in plastic bags or in other containers will not be picked up!

Q. If my container is damaged by traffic, will it be replaced?

A. YES: An attempt should be made to identify the individual responsible to allow the City to get reimbursed.

 

Q. Is single stream mandatory?

A. YES: Recycling has been mandated by the State of Connecticut.

 

Q. What do I do with my old trash receptacle and blue bin?

A. If they are no longer of any use to you they may be brought to the Transfer Station to

be recycled.

 

Q. Do I still have to rinse bottles, jars, plastics and cans?

A. YES: All containers must be rinsed and free of food residue prior to placing them in your recycling cart.

 

Q. Will my trash and recycling collection take place on the same day and frequency as it is currently?

A. YES: You will be notified prior to any changes in your collection day.

 

Q. Can I recycle empty motor oil and antifreeze containers?

A. NO: Motor oil and antifreeze are considered hazardous and even though the containers

have been emptied, there is still a residue left behind.

 

Q. Can I put plastic bags in the recycle cart?

A. NO: Newspaper bags, grocery bags, bags inside cereal and cracker boxes, and black plastic bags should be put into your trash cart.

 

Q. Can I leave bottle caps on?

A. YES

 

Q. Can I recycle Styrofoam such as “peanuts” and other packing materials?

A.  NO: Styrofoam is not recyclable.

 

Q. Can I recycle pizza boxes?

A. YES: Provided that all food residue has been removed.

 

Q. Where can I obtain detailed information on what items can be recycled?

A. An informational flyer will be left on your cart when it is delivered and is also posted on the City web page.

 

Q. My driveway is very steep and/or long so I normally drive to the end of the driveway and leave bags of trash and the blue bin there to be collected. May I continue to do so?

A. NO: The new automated only allow for collections of the approved carts that were supplied to you.

 

Q. If I have items that will not fit in my cart will they be picked up?

A. NO: Bulky items, such as furniture, mattresses, metal items and wood that will not fit in the approved carts provided may, at no cost to residents, be brought to the Shelton Transfer Station at 866 River Road.  Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday from 7:00 A.M.to 1:30 P.M.

 

Q. How should my cart be positioned to ensure that it gets picked up?

A. Place the cart on the curb, not in the street, with the handle away from the

street. Carts must be placed at least three feet away from each other and from any

other objects to avoid damage and to facilitate collection.
